Dr. Samuel Z. Goldhaber, Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, is a Senior Staff Member of the Cardiovascular Medicine Division at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. After earning his medical degree at Harvard Medical School, he completed his internship and residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and his chief residency at West Roxbury VA Medical Center. He did his Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship Training at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Goldhaber is the Director of the Venous Thromboembolism Research Group and serves as Principal Investigator of a broad range of randomized clinical trials and observational studies related to the prevention, treatment, diagnosis, and epidemiology of venous thromboembolism.  He is also President of the North American Thrombosis Forum (NATF), a nonprofit organization whose mission statement is to save lives through prevention and education.

His recent published work has focused on:  1) prevention of death and disability among hospitalized patients at risk for deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism, 2) use of advanced therapies such as thrombolytic therapy and mechanical and catheter interventions to treat high risk patients with pulmonary embolism, 3) improving diagnostic algorithms with electronic feedback and education of practitioners, 4) rationale use of novel oral anticoagulants to prevent stroke in atrial fibrillation and implementation of novel strategies to treat venous thromboembolism, and 5) improving patient education to increase medication adherence.
